Chapter 22
Soon they were all buckled into Jackâs sedan and driving down the road. Jack had explained that the doctor hadnât been able to tell them much about her case due to privacy rules. He asked Penelope if she would be comfortable in signing a paper to allow the doctors to talk to them. He shared that otherwise, her Daddies would not be able to go back to the exam room with her. His eyes met hers in the rearview mirror.
âI donât want to go back there by myself. I like Dr. Palmer. Sheâs pretty and nice. Sheâs been helping me feel better but . . .â her voice trailed off.
âBaby, can you tell us what type of cancer you have?â Dylan asked softly.
âBladder,â she whispered. âThey caught it early. Iâm really lucky. I kept getting bladder infections, and they put a probe in my bladder and found bad cells.â
âIâm glad they caught it early. Is the treatment working?â Jack tried to keep his attention on the road, but his heart was in the backseat with his Little girl.
âHmmm, it was. Then my other Daddy decided that I wasnât really sick. He wouldnât let me go anymore,â Penelope explained sadly. âI mean, I didnât want to go. Itâs no fun, but I knew I needed to go.â
âDr. Palmer, herself, called me back immediately when I phoned her office. She is going to be glad to see you,â Jack told her. Silence filled the car as they all digested the information that Penelope had shared. Dylan stretched an arm over the seat to hold Penelopeâs hand.
âWeâre all in this together, Penelope. Jack and I will do all we can to help you. Are you ready to fight for us?â he looked meaningfully at her.
âIâm going to try,â Penelope said slowly. âIâm going to try really, really hard.â
âThatâs our girl,â Dylan squeezed her hand.
All too soon, Jack was turning into the drive of the big office building. They rode up the elevator with Penelope holding each of her Daddies hands. As they entered the cheerfully decorated doctorâs office, the receptionist happily greeted Penelope, sharing that she was so glad to see her. Penelope asked for the form to allow the doctor to talk to Dylan and Jack about her treatment. Once that was signed and witnessed, the trio took a seat in the waiting room.
When her name was called, they walked down the short corridor to the exam room. The nurse noted Penelopeâs weight and blood pressure in her chart. She asked questions about Penelopeâs broken arm and added the date of her recent surgery as well on the paperwork. Then, she told Penelope to take all her clothes off and to put on the gown. In just a few minutes, she was seated on the table with a Daddy on either side.
The door opened. A tall, willowy woman walked in dressed in a white coat. She immediately greeted Penelope, âI am so glad to see you, Penelope. You didnât return for your treatment, and you just disappeared.
